Chambliss (Pro-FCS) Amendment Still Possible: Calls Needed to Stop FCS Expansion in Senate!

PLEASE ACT NOW! STOP FCS EXPANSION IN THE SENATE!

Senate leaders continued to seek agreement on Tuesday, November 13th on a list of amendments that could be offered to the Senate farm bill (H.R. 2419). Senators have filed more than 100 amendments to the farm bill. Senators spoke positively Tuesday afternoon about being able to work out an agreement on a number of the amendments that would be offered, and Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) stated that the Senate could pass a bill this week if the amendment list were agreed to.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), the committee's ranking member, had indicated he still intended to offer an amendment expanding Farm Credit System lending powers in the area of loans to bio-refineries (investor-owned corporations) and housing in communities of 7,500! If the amendment is agreed to, then FCS lobbyists said they will push their original Horizons project proposal in conference to obtain expanded powers to make commercial business loans, which would be devastating to community banks.

Please call Senator Durbin's office at (202) 224-2152 and call Senator Obama's office at (202) 224-2854 to urge opposition to this amendment. Last week, staff from both Senator Durbin's and Senator Obama's office expressed a position of "soft opposition" to the Chambliss amendment. Calls are recommended, however, if you prefer, you can visit CBAI's Legislative Action Center to personalize a sample letter to send to Senators Durbin and Obama.

PLEASE ACT TODAY TO ENSURE SENATORS DURBIN & OBAMA'S CONTINUED OPPOSITION TO THE CHAMBLISS AMENDMENT!!
