JURY AWARDS WAL-MART EMPLOYEES $172 MILLION
01/23/06

Thousands of Wal-mart employees were awarded $172 million by a California jury on December 22. The workers claimed that they were illegally denied lunch breaks. The class-action lawsuit in Alameda County Superior Court is one of about 40 nationwide alleging workplace violations by Wal-mart, and the first to go to trial. Under the law, the company must pay workers a full hour's wages for every missed lunch. Attorneys for Wal-Mart said the verdict will likely be appealed.
