CBAI Convention Special Session Addresses Identity Theft and Card Fraud

CBSC and Affinion Group are hosting a special session at the CBAI Annual Convention titled “Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Identity Thieves and How To Protect Your Community Bank”. Scheduled for Saturday, September 26, 2009, from 10:30am to 11:45am, this session features Dan Clements, President of CardCops, a division of Affinion Security Center.

If Dan’s name sounds familiar, it may be because he appeared on NBC’s Dateline with Chris Hanson in a segment titled “To Catch An Identity Thief”. In this ground-breaking investigation, Dan exposed how criminals steal and sell credit and debit card information, then use that information to purchase goods and resell them for cash. And the entire event happens at a computer terminal!

According to the results of the 2009 ICBA Community Bank Payments Survey, 91% of responding banks reissued a debit card last year as a result of fraud and 78% suffered a monetary fraud loss. Fraud happens everywhere and it’s rate of occurrence is increasing.

Fraud not only generates direct operating losses for banks, it erodes customer confidence in bank security. Fortunately, community bankers are taking steps to protect their customers, and the bank’s reputation, from the ever-increasing incidence of fraud. In fact, 65% of community banks in the ICBA survey indicated they have increased spending to address payment fraud.

Please plan to attend this special session and learn how your bank can arm your customers with the tools to better protect themselves against identity theft.
